
Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies, with Uncle Henry, who was a farmer, and Aunt Emily, who was the farmer’s wife.	Dorothy bodde mitt på Kansas stora prärie tillsammans med farbror Henry, som var bonde, och faster Emily, som var bondhustrun.

“Quick, Dorothy!” she screamed. “Run for the cellar!”	"Fort, Dorothy!" skrek hon. "Spring till källaren!"
Aunt Emily, badly frightened, threw open the trap door in the floor and climbed down the ladder into the small, dark hole.	Faster Emily, mycket rädd, slängde upp luckan i golvet och klättrade ner för stegen till det lilla mörka hålet.

When she was halfway across the room, there was a great shriek from the wind, and the house shook so hard that she lost her footing and sat down suddenly on the floor. Hours passed, and slowly Dorothy got over her fright; but she felt quite lonely, and the wind shrieked so loudly all around her that she nearly became deaf. At first, she had wondered if she would be smashed to pieces when the house fell again.	Först hade hon undrat om hon skulle krossas i bitar när huset föll igen.
But as the hours passed and nothing terrible happened, she stopped worrying and waited calmly to see what the future would bring.	Men allt eftersom timmarna gick och inget hemskt hände slutade hon oroa sig, och väntade lugnt på vad framtiden skulle föra med sig.
In spite of the swaying of the house and the wailing of the wind, Dorothy soon closed her eyes and fell fast asleep.	Trots att huset svajade och vinden tjöt slöt Dorothy snart ögonen och somnade djupt.
