
It was late in the afternoon when Mr Utterson found his way to Dr Jekyll’s front door, where he was let in by Poole, the butler.	Era final da tarde quando o Sr. Utterson chegou à porta da frente do Dr. Jekyll, onde foi recebido por Poole, o mordomo.
He was led through the kitchen offices, across a yard and into the doctor’s laboratory.	Foi levado pela cozinha, através de um pátio e até ao laboratório do médico.

Close to the fireplace sat Dr Jekyll, looking very sick.	Perto da lareira estava sentado o Dr. Jekyll, com um ar muito doente.
He did not stand up to meet his visitor, but held out his hand and welcomed him in a different voice.	Não se levantou para receber o visitante, mas estendeu a mão e deu-lhe as boas-vindas com uma voz diferente.
“Have you heard the news?” said Mr Utterson, as soon as Poole had left them.	"Já ouviu as notícias?" disse o Sr. Utterson, assim que Poole os deixou a sós.
“You have not been mad enough to hide this fellow?”	"Não foi tão imprudente ao ponto de esconder esse indivíduo?"
“Utterson, I swear to God,” cried the doctor. “I will never set eyes on him again.”	"Utterson, juro por Deus," exclamou o médico. "Nunca mais o voltarei a ver."
The lawyer listened, but did not like his friend’s feverish manner.	O advogado ouviu, mas não gostou do estado febril do amigo.
“I hope you may be right. If it came to a trial, your name might appear.”	"Espero que tenha razão. Se isto chegasse a julgamento, o seu nome poderia aparecer."
Jekyll said hesitantly: “I have received a letter, and I am at a loss whether I should show it to the police.	O Jekyll disse hesitante: "Recebi uma carta, e não sei bem se devo mostrá-la à polícia.
I would like to leave it in your hands, Utterson. I have such a great trust in you.”	Gostaria de a deixar nas suas mãos, Utterson. Tenho uma confiança enorme em si."
The letter was written in odd handwriting and signed “Edward Hyde.”	A carta estava escrita com uma caligrafia estranha e assinada "Edward Hyde."
“Shall I keep this and sleep on it?” asked Utterson.	"Devo ficar com isto e dormir sobre o assunto?" perguntou o Utterson.
“I wish you to judge it for me entirely,” the doctor replied. “I have lost confidence in myself.”	"Quero que julgue por mim, inteiramente," respondeu o médico. "Perdi a confiança em mim mesmo."
On his way out, the lawyer stopped and had a word with Poole.	Ao sair, o advogado parou e trocou umas palavras com o Poole.
“By the way,” he said, “there was a letter handed in today. Who brought it?”	"A propósito," disse ele, "foi entregue uma carta hoje. Quem a trouxe?"
But Poole was certain that nothing had come except for circulars.	Mas o Poole tinha a certeza de que não tinha chegado nada, exceto circulares.
This news sent off the visitor with his fears renewed.	Esta notícia fez o visitante ir embora com os receios renovados.
Shortly after, Mr Utterson sat down with Mr Guest, his head clerk, and a bottle of old wine that had long dwelled in the cellar of his house.	Pouco depois, o Sr. Utterson sentou-se com o Sr. Guest, o seu chefe de escritório, e uma garrafa de vinho velho que havia muito repousava na adega da sua casa.
Then the servant entered with a note.	Então, o criado entrou com um bilhete.
“Is that from Dr Jekyll, sir?” inquired the clerk.	"É do Dr. Jekyll, senhor?" perguntou o escriturário.
“Only an invitation to dinner. Why? Do you want to see it?”	"É apenas um convite para jantar. Porquê? Quer vê-lo?"
The clerk laid the two sheets of paper alongside and closely compared their contents.	O escriturário colocou as duas folhas de papel lado a lado e comparou atentamente o seu conteúdo.
“Thank you, sir,” he said at last, returning both sheets.	"Obrigado, senhor," disse ele por fim, devolvendo ambas as folhas.
“It’s a very interesting signature.”	"É uma assinatura muito interessante."
There was a pause, during which Mr Utterson was in deep thought.	Houve uma pausa, durante a qual o Sr. Utterson ficou mergulhado em pensamentos.
“Why did you compare them, Guest?” he inquired suddenly.	"Porque é que as comparou, Guest?" perguntou ele de repente.
“Well, sir,” replied the clerk, “there’s a rather singular resemblance; the two hands are in many ways identical, only differently sloped.”	"Bem, senhor," respondeu o escriturário, "há uma semelhança bastante singular; as duas caligrafias são, em muitos aspetos, idênticas, apenas com uma inclinação diferente."
When Mr Utterson was alone that night, he locked the note into his safe, where it stayed from that point onwards.	Quando o Sr. Utterson ficou sozinho nessa noite, trancou o bilhete no seu cofre, onde ficou guardado daquele momento em diante.
“What!” he thought. “Henry Jekyll forged the handwriting of a murderer!”	"O quê!" pensou ele. "O Henry Jekyll falsificou a caligrafia de um assassino!"
And his blood ran cold in his veins.	E o sangue gelou-lhe nas veias.
